The Senior Power BI / Data Visualization Engineer is a strategic and technical leader responsible for architecting, developing, and optimizing BI solutions that drive decision-making and operational excellence. This role bridges technical execution with strategic design – leading data visualization initiatives, ensuring scalable data architectures, and mentoring junior engineers and analysts across multiple concurrent projects.
You will collaborate closely with data engineers, data scientists, and business stakeholders to transform raw data into actionable intelligence through intuitive, high-impact dashboards and visual analytics. The role demands a balance of deep technical proficiency, design sensibility, and business fluency.
Key Responsibilities may include:
Solution Architecture and Technical Leadership
- Lead the end-to-end development of potentially complex Power BI solutions from data modeling and DAX optimization to deployment and governance, ensuring alignment with analytical and business goals.
- Collaborate with data engineers to define efficient, reliable data models and implement best practices for ETL, semantic layer design, and data refresh performance.
- Architect Power BI environments to support scalability, maintainability, and user adoption across client and internal contexts.
- Evaluate and integrate complementary tools within the Microsoft Power Platform (e.g., Power Automate, Power Apps) to extend solution functionality.
- Drive the implementation of telemetry, monitoring, and quality assurance frameworks for BI deliverables.
Cross-Functional Collaboration and Strategic Delivery
- Partner with data analysts, scientists, and business leads to translate analytical needs into robust, visually engaging, and actionable dashboards.
- Act as a primary visualization consultant during project scoping and execution, ensuring that design, interactivity, and storytelling principles are embedded into deliverables.
- Facilitate workshops or client sessions to gather requirements, validate prototypes, and demonstrate insights through compelling narratives.
- Advocate for data visualization standards and design consistency across all projects and clients.
Mentorship and Knowledge Development
- Mentor junior BI engineers and analysts, providing technical guidance on data modeling, DAX, and visualization best practices.
- Conduct regular code and dashboard reviews to ensure adherence to quality, performance, and usability standards.
- Lead internal training or knowledge-sharing sessions on Power BI advancements, design frameworks, and data storytelling methodologies.
Impact Measurement and Continuous Improvement
- Define and track key performance metrics (e.g., dashboard adoption, query performance, data refresh reliability) to evaluate BI solution effectiveness.
- Identify opportunities for BI automation, data-driven process improvement, and self-service analytics enablement.
- Stay abreast of emerging visualization tools, Power BI ecosystem updates, and data communication innovations to inform roadmap and strategy recommendations.
Minimum Qualifications
- 5+ years of progressive experience in data visualization, BI engineering, or analytics development roles, with proven ownership of end-to-end Power BI solutions.
- Deep expertise in Power BI development, including DAX, Power Query (M), Data Modeling, and Performance Optimization.
- Proficiency in SQL and experience in data wrangling and transformation using Python.
- Demonstrated application of visualization and storytelling principles to communicate analytical insights effectively.
- Proven experience collaborating with cross-functional data teams (engineering, analytics, data science) and translating business requirements into technical deliverables.
- Familiarity with version control (e.g., Git), deployment pipelines, and BI governance frameworks.
- Strong interpersonal and presentation skills with a track record of stakeholder engagement and mentorship.
Preferred Additional Qualifications
- Experience with the Microsoft Power Platform stack (Power Apps, Power Automate).
- Exposure to other BI tools (e.g., Tableau, Looker, Qlik).
- Understanding of advanced visualization techniques (e.g., custom visuals via JavaScript or Python integration).
- Working knowledge of statistical and analytical methods to support data-driven storytelling.
- Experience designing or implementing enterprise BI strategies including metadata management, access control, and performance tuning.
