Summary of Work Activities and Responsibilities:
The Fabrication Research and Equipment Officer will manage the SOSE Fabrication Laboratory, support the Innovation Design Engineering program, and aid in research initiatives within the university, especially in the design and development of experimental setups. This position combines technical expertise with a focus on collaborative research, facilitating the design and fabrication of innovative research setups. The officer will ensure the efficient operation and maintenance of advanced fabrication equipment, including 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, and PCB etching tools. Implementing safety protocols and ensuring compliance with industry standards will be essential to minimize risks associated with equipment use. The officer will collaborate with faculty and students to assist in the design and development of experimental setups and prototypes for research projects. They will provide technical expertise in selecting appropriate fabrication methods and materials, leveraging knowledge of various fabrication processes to offer creative solutions and insights for tackling research activities across the university. The officer will also develop and conduct training sessions and workshops on the safe and effective use of fabrication equipment, creating instructional materials to enhance understanding of fabrication techniques.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
A. Equipment Management, Training, and Development
- Oversee the operation, maintenance, and calibration of advanced fabrication equipment, including 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, and PCB etching tools.
- Implement safety protocols and ensure compliance with industry standards to minimize risks associated with equipment use.
- Develop and conduct training sessions and workshops on the safe and effective use of fabrication equipment for students and faculty across various departments.
- Create instructional materials and resources to enhance understanding of fabrication techniques and equipment operation.
- Stay updated on emerging technologies and best practices in fabrication and research methodologies.
- Recommend enhancements to equipment and processes to improve efficiency and expand the capabilities of the FabLab.
- Assist with budget preparations for the purchase of FabLab equipment.
B. Research Support
- Collaborate with faculty and students to assist in the design and development of experimental setups and prototypes for research projects.
- Provide technical expertise in selecting appropriate fabrication methods and materials tailored to specific research needs.
- Leverage knowledge of various fabrication processes to offer creative solutions and insights for tackling research activities across the university.
- Collaborate with other workshops and laboratories in the university to diversify research methods
- Assist in the planning and execution of research ventures by providing hands-on support in fabrication processes.
- Work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to translate concepts into tangible prototypes and products.
C. Community Engagement
- Promote the FabLab's open laboratory philosophy by facilitating access to equipment and resources for a diverse community of users.
- Encourage knowledge sharing and collaboration among students and faculty from various disciplines to foster innovation
- Interact effectively with a diverse range of students, including international students, to foster an inclusive learning environment.
- Prepare the laboratory for various classes and fabrication activities, ensuring that all resources are readily available and accessible.
D. Performs other duties and addresses needs of the IDE program as may be assigned by the SOSE Dean or ECCE Chair
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Proficient in fabrication processes in engineering such as 3D Printing, Laser Cutting, CNC, and Electronics Etching
- In-depth knowledge of operating and troubleshooting advanced fabrication machinery and tools.
- Proficient in 3D and 2D programs such as Computer Aided Design and Graphic Software
- Strong understanding of safety standards and best practices in equipment operation.
- Understanding of different materials (metals, plastics, composites, etc.) and their properties to choose suitable materials for projects.
- Understanding of research design and methodologies relevant to engineering and technology projects.
- Strong hands-on skills in operating and maintaining various fabrication equipment.
- Ability to identify issues quickly and develop effective solutions, especially in technical and fabrication contexts.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with students, faculty, and staff, including diverse international populations.
- Skills in developing and delivering training programs and workshops on equipment use and fabrication processes.
- Innovative mindset to generate new ideas and approaches in research and fabrication.
- Flexibility to adjust to changing technologies and evolving project needs.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and other IT related applications
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Possesses good records-keeping and time management skills
- Can anticipate problems ahead of time and has a proposed plan of action or solution
- Willing to learn new things and be trained
- Performs tasks assigned to him/her efficiently
- Physically fit to travel across different school buildings in campus regularly
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Graduate of any Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Design, or a related field.
- Experience in handling fabrication equipment, or working with mechanical equipment in workshops
- Additional experience in laboratory, university, or industrial setting related to the position is preferred but not required
- Openness to different cultures is an advantage but not required
