Job Description

Operations Manager (Transportation) is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of their company’s transportation department. They commonly manage a team of drivers, dispatchers, and other staff who work together to ensure that goods and passengers are delivered on time and safely.

Operations Manager (Transportation) may also be tasked with developing new ways to improve efficiency or reduce costs in their organization’s transportation operations. This might involve implementing new technology, updating procedures, or even changing how certain jobs are performed within the department.

  • Oversee all aspects of the operations department, including but not limited to: budgeting, scheduling, route planning, fleet maintenance, and compliance with safety regulations
  • Work closely with other departments within the company to ensure efficient and cost-effective operations
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve productivity and optimize resources
  • Monitor trends and developments in the transportation industry and make recommendations for changes or improvements to management
  • Prepare and submit reports on the department’s activities, progress, and problems encountered
  • Investigate and resolve customer complaints regarding transportation services
  • Supervise the work of transportation personnel and provide training and development opportunities as needed
  • Select, hire, and train new employees in accordance with company policies and procedures
  • Evaluate employee performance and take disciplinary action when necessary
  • Plan and coordinate special events or projects as needed
  • Manage the department’s budget and control costs where possible
  • Keep abreast of new technologies and developments that could impact the department’s operations

Minimum Qualifications

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, transportation, or related field
  • 5+ years experience in transportation operations management
  • Proven track record of successful route planning and optimization
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and time-management skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and transportation software programs

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • MBA or other advanced degree
  • 7+ years experience in transportation operations management
  • Experience with load-balancing and capacity planning
  • In-depth knowledge of DOT regulations
  • Familiarity with Six Sigma or other process improvement methodology
